Alex Scarborough and Karen Oosthuizen, two athletes from our club, Special Olympics Surrey, as well as our Head coach, Pete Jesse have been selected as part of the Alpine Ski team to represent Great Britain at the World Winter Games in Schladming, Austria next year. This is an international event where over 3000 athletes with learning disabilities from across the world meet once every 4 years. It is truly an honor to represent your country and a wonderful once in a lifetime experience for Alex and Karen.
Special Olympics is volunteer based charity that provides a lifetime of learning through sport across all ages and abilities. We offer year round training and competition at local, regional, national and international levels. It is proven that taking part in the Special Olympics program improves the quality of daily life of people with intellectual disabilities. Alex and Karen both have intellectual disabilities.
They are also members of Aldershot Snowsports for the Disabled (ASD) and they are joining us in this appeal to help us get our athletes to the games. ASD is the oldest disability ski club in the country and offers people with both physical and intellectual the opportunity to learn and develop skiing skills.
