Story
This primary school is in an isolated rural area in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. It has over 200 pupils ranging in age from 5 years old to teenagers who are the children of local farm labourers and tenants. Around 80% of them are HIV/Aids orphans and some of them walk 10 km each way to school every day.
The families are keen for their children to receive a formal education; to increase the opportunity for them to get paid employment, often in the expanding tourism industry after they complete their education.
The home language of pupils and teachers is Zulu but lessons are taught in English. Both pupils and teachers need support to improve their use and understanding of English.
A small group of 6th form students from Arden Academy, Knowle, Solihull, UK will visit the school this summer for 4 weeks to help teach English, Maths, IT , Science and other subjects.
As well as providing education for pupils the School also provides wider community services for poor local Zulu families. It started as a run down state school but is now totally voluntary funded under local trustee leadership of a retired teacher. It now benefits from electricity and running water and the children are developing skills that allow them to compete with pupils in better funded, more urban schools. They still struggle for basic resources such as books and stationery and this project will deliver more of these.
There will also be opportunities to enjoy games, crafts and music together.
As well as the many things the children will benefit from as a result of this experience, the UK students will also gain in many ways. This will be a life changing experience for everyone involved and will help to promote understanding and appreciation of the lives and cultures in South Africa and the U.K.
All donations will be put towards this project in July/August 2016 and will benefit the School's continued development and therefore much appreciated,
