Story
Hi, I'm Chris, thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page
In early 2012 I sustained an acquired brain injury, and since then my life has changed dramatically. As part of my rehabilitation I attended the Dirrans Head Injury Centre, in Kilwinning. Through the Dirrans I learned about bike maintenance and attained my Velotech Bronze certificate in Glasgow. Since then the Dirrans has a new head injury centre and the old centre was acquired by CAVE community care - which has "On Yer Bike" attached to it, who service and maintain bikes as well as selling a full range on second hand bikes for the public to buy.
Since developing my interest in all things cycling, I have become a member of Fullarton Wheelers Cycling Club, in Irvine. I cycle with the group at least twice a week, however, I also cycle in my own time and try to cover at least 200 miles per week.
Since my injury, I have also attended college, working towards a certificate in HNC Social Care. This has opened my eyes to the inequalities present in the world, specifically around poverty and how it effects communities . My time volunteering as part of my course focused my attention on the work of local foodbanks, which are a valuable resource, especially for those in dire need of food.
I aim to raise money to allow a local foodbank to provide during the summer period. In some areas, especially in North Ayrshire around 1 in 4 children live in poverty and go to school hungry, and as such, when schools close for summer, free school meals are not available.
To do this I plan to take the 7am ferry from Ardrossan to Arran on Friday the 17th of June. There I plan to cycle around the Isle of Arran 4 times (which is around 224 miles - equal to what I would usually cover in a week). I plan to achieve a minimum of 200 miles, as I realise that this will be a gruelling task and I will have just 13.5 hours to achieve this feat, as the last ferry departs Arran at 9.30pm on the Friday evening.
