Story
We're raising money to support the Cambridgeshire College group of the Riding for the Disabled Association. This provides young adults with opportunities to gain confidence and have fun with horses and other riders. Group members also compete, from regional level to the National Championships. It's a friendly group with an excellent mix of volunteers, parents, riders and, of course, horses. The riders are encouraged to be the best they can be and are given every opportunity to succeed and to enjoy themselves.
Running anything to do with horses tends to be expensive. Horses are expensive to care for, and almost everything to do with them is expensive to buy! Specialist tack, horse transport, insurance - all this and more adds up. Riders pay a fee for each session which is heavily subsidised - this allows them to continue training, competing and having fun, but barely begins to cover the full costs involved. As a charity, the RDA is entirely dependent upon donations.
The money doesn't just go on the horses. It goes towards providing fantastic opportunities for people with all kinds of disabilities - competing at the National Championships, working towards RDA Awards, buying rosettes for special events, and - of course - training volunteers in all the skills needed to handle horses and disabled people safely.
The work of the RDA is invaluable. It is far more than just an opportunity to have a 'pony ride' (although this is also a part of it). RDA is a form of physiotherapy which you never get tired of. It teaches you to communicate with the world around you, and with a being who does not judge you. It makes disability normal. It shows you what you can do.
