Story
Aged 31, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Being a pre-menopausal women, I didn't fit the stereotype of a breast cancer patient. When I had my operation, I was the youngest on the ward by a good twenty years - the eldest lady being in her 80's & concerned that as a 'baby' I was in the same situation! As soon as I was diagnosed, I was provided with a file full of advice from the lovely people at Breast Cancer Care; part of this advice was to find a support group. This is where I came across a problem - I found that there was nothing substantial on offer to young women in this position.
What I wanted, and felt I needed, was a forum where it was a positive environment, where I could speak to other people in the same situation. The only things I found, although supportive, seemed to concentrate on the prognosis; I couldn't bring myself to be involved in these forums as I have always strongly believed in positivity.
I plan to set up a charity for those that don't fit the breast cancer patient stereotype. This will be predominantly for young women, but my hope is that if it is successful, this will also be extended to men. However, no one will be turned away. The charity will provide events and an environment where sufferers and their supporters can gather together and enjoy life - where although we know that our mortality hangs in the balance, the focus is on a positive environment.
This crowdfunding is to raise the funds necessary to register the charity & start offering this support. If for any reason the charity is not viable, monies raised will be donated to Breast Cancer Care.
On 3rd April, Sean & I will be running the Paris Marathon. I use the term running loosely, I'm still receiving treatment so it won't be a sprint, but Sean will be running and most probably coming back to carry me across the finish line also! A big thank you in advance for all donations received. Please consider donating as much or as little as you can - every penny will help.
