The money will be used to keep the lift buildings and equipment in good working order so that it will ready to open when the repairs to the carriages are completed next year. The money will be used to employ maintenance staff and pay for utilities while the lift is closed.

The Folkestone cliff lift is a water balanced funicular opened in 1885, and remarkably remains substantially intact as built. The original lift is still in full working order and is in daily operation during the summer months. It was the third such hydraulic lift in the world.
