My name is David as part of my Computing degree I’ve been working for local government in Kent for my year in industry. I’ve had the privilege to meet some fantastic people working on some genuinely radical projects in the county, using #DigitalTransformation to transform local services. Technology is a great enabler; allowing those who are given the opportunity to capture their creativity and levitate themselves out of poverty. No matter what your background may be if you’re a great coder, you’re a great coder and these skills could be used to create the next billion dollar selling app!
Poverty is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Economic growth must be inclusive to provide sustainable jobs and promote equality.
For the next series of blogs on ThatsGROOVY.co.uk we are going to Uganda see how the other half live. Extreme poverty rates have been cut by more than half since 1990. This is a remarkable achievement but ‘The Pearl of Africa’ is still one of the world’s poorest countries where:
• 1.2 million children are orphans
• As little as 16% of children go to secondary school
• The average life expectancy is just 59 years
Meanwhile the richest 85 people in the world are worth more than the poorest 3.5 billion.
We believe that a different world is possible!
The Ruhanga Development School in Uganda was built and opened in 2008 and for some this is their only chance to get educated, learning skills that enable them to raise themselves and their families above the poverty line.
