Weʼve raised £1,972 to rebuild a memorial to a forgotten British soldier

    Story

Captain Meakin was killed fighting for his country in 1916. His memorial is badly damaged and in need of urgent repair. His family have died out and no one is caring for his monument. Our 17 volunteers are repairing the stone on many trips to France but the cost to lift the memorial to its new location where people can visit it on their pilgrimages to the battlefields are expensive. We are paying most of the cost but cannot afford the entire project in time for the centenary celebrations in 2016

The foundations to the memorial are now so badly deteriorated that it is in real danger of collapse and we are close to losing this for ever. The good news is that my hard work is finally beginning to pay off. In collaboration with the mayor of Les Boeufs, the landowner and the company who are putting up large wind turbines in the field next to the memorial we have managed to build a new set of foundations in the area we have chosen for the memorial to be sited when we can actually afford to have it lifted. I note from Barrie Thorpe's book that the memorial was originally planned to have been moved to the roadside in 1999 when funds were supposedly raised and available - so well done at last Brian!
