Story
Two of Cramlington Rockets’ ex-juniors have been selected to represent Great Britain after impressing in the university game this season.
Martyn Steel, 21, who currently studies at University of Leicester, and Lewis Davey of Leeds Trinity University, 20, are part of a 20-man squad set to travel on the 22nd July and will play matches against local sides as well as running sessions to help the growth of the game in Hungary.
Steel has enjoyed a successful season in Leicester, where the university team won the league, reached the final of the cup and won Team of the Year at the Team Leicester Sport Awards.
Davey meanwhile has recently agreed terms to play for Kingston Press Championship side, Keighley Cougars while combining his studies at university.
Both players need to raise £700 each to travel and the club is trying to raise £500 to help towards their costs.
“It is brilliant to see two of our lads progress and have this opportunity” Said Rockets coach, Steven Beaty.
“We are very proud of what they have achieved so far and it will be a great experience for them to continue to develop as people and players.”
"Hopefully the Rockets Family will club together and we can raise enough to make sure they are on the plane next month."
The Pioneers’ first match is on July 23, a date which also marks the fifth anniversary of the first game of Rugby League to have been played in Hungary.
The squad will then play in the EuroTag tournament on July 27 and then compete in a second tournament on July 30, before flying back to the UK the following day.
During the week, the Pioneers will deliver introduction to Rugby League sessions to local children and young people, as well as supporting the Hungarian national side and existing local sides as well as running sessions to help the growth of the game in Hungary.
The squad will also take in a trip to the country’s capital city, Budapest.
