    Story

I am Dr Jac Saorsa, visual artist and researcher. I started Drawing Women’s Cancer in Cardiff, Wales in 2012. I focused initially on gynaecological cancers, and since, through the dedicated website and exhibitions of my art work, the project has generated hugely positive feedback both from women with cancer and from carers and health professionals who look after them.
The primary aim of Drawing Women’s Cancer is to increase public awareness and understanding of the cancer experience by exploiting the potential of art to change the way that cancer is ‘seen’. My focus is always the individual, the ‘person behind the diagnosis’ and I try to ‘articulate’ through my work the uniquely subjective experience of cancer as an illness that impacts not just on the physical and emotional trauma of diagnosis and treatment, but on every aspect of the woman’s life. The project as a whole aims to have a positive effect on how the public respond to cancer patients, and how women with cancer come to terms with their own situation.

For the majority of the work I have been self-funded, and the work has taken place within the Wales area. Now I would like to expand the project to include breast cancer and take the work beyond Wales. I am totally committed to the Drawing Women’s Cancer project and from the responses I have received since the very beginning I am convinced of the necessity to continue developing the work. To this end I am setting up this page on Just Giving. Women across the UK have been responding to my respectful request for individual stories of their experiences of breast cancer which I will incorporate into the body of work I am developing which is to be exhibited throughout November at a dedicated arts and health gallery in Llandough Hospital in Cardiff. Because I believe very deeply in the value of face to face meetings any money raised through this page will help fund my travel to do so, as well as help fund the actual production of the art work.

Today I met with the Specialist Nurses at the Cardiff and Vale Breast Centre and I am excited that Breast Cancer: a creative intervention has definitely got off the ground! Still a few more days to donate here if you can - it would help so much to push the project forward!
