    Story

The Pro Corda Garden: A Suffolk Retreat creates a space for intimate music performance, or quiet reflection.

One of the leading music course providers in Europe, the Pro Corda Trust makes ensemble performance music training available to young people from all social backgrounds and abilities. The garden is designed to nurture the potential of each of these children: it creates an inspiring backdrop for music rehearsal and interpretation; for a child with autism, a place of sensory retreat.

Pro Corda is the only UK arts education organisation to serve young people with disabilities in equal numbers to those without disability. The Trust has pioneered a life-changing course for children with Special Educational Needs.

Its “Create Together”, has a particular focus on music and autism. Unique teaching methods bring out hidden personalities and talents through improvised musical performance and stage production. Ensemble training enables children to explore the benefits of chamber music and develop their ability to socially interact with others.

The magical environment of Leiston Abbey is key to the process. SEN children, many from deprived backgrounds, enjoy the charm and seclusion of this setting. The design of the Pro Corda Garden: A Suffolk Retreat, is directly linked to this aspect of the Trust’s work.

The Pro Corda Garden: A Suffolk Retreat provides the trust with a unique opportunity to raise awareness of its mission. Leiston Abbey, Pro Corda’s home, inspires the garden’s design. It also takes inspiration from traditional Suffolk crafts and materials, combining timber, flint, lime washed mortar, brickwork and pargetting. The summerhouse provides enclosure and security while enjoying views into billowing ornamental grasses and calming pastel planting palate of roses, peonies and irises in soft blues, yellows and corals.

Please donate to enable us to rebuild this magical space for children with SEN, Autism and of exceptional talent.
