    Story

We went to volunteer in the Jungle in August 2015. On our return we started Help Calais and raised enough to fund the opening of the warehouse with L'Auberge des Migrants and start the shelter building program. We continued to concentrate on outreach in the Jungle - the group changed its name to Help Refugees which funds many projects.

The destruction of the South side of the Jungle is now complete. We don't know how long the North side will remain. Long term committed volunteers have been providing food, shelter, clothing and community support since last August. We want to maintain the relationships we have made with communities - although people come and go, the communities are fairly consistent. If long term volunteers are unable to stay, valuable knowledge, experience and hence, cultural sensitivity is lost. Also it is necessary to have a 24 hour on-site volunteer presence in order to provide emergency support. The Auberge warehouse does an excellent job of providing basic needs but on-site volunteers can respond whenever people fall through the system. The difference between the way the refugees in the jungle are being supported and the official style government solutions is that we are able to work in a way which recognizes the equality between us.

At a deeper level, one of the most important effects of the presence of long term volunteers is that it preserves the purity and equality in relationships between "helpers" and "recipients". In spite of the general suffering there are many moments where simple human joy is shared. It is revealed to us that we all have been and always will be one big family, regardless of where we come from or what our circumstances might be. Stranger is just a friend that you have not met yet. Humanitarian aid is not just about throwing a sleeping bag at a refugee and moving on. It is about understanding that person and looking toward a future when no one ever has to be in that position again.

Huge thanks for the donations which took us to £2,216. The Jungle is very tense, sad and afraid at this time. the future is very uncertain. There is ironic overcrowding and many internal problems. Many are trapped, seeing no way out. We will continue to support as best we can!
