Story
Local communities in Northern Kenya are pastoralists who prefer goat grazing to education, sending even their children to the bush all day rather than to school. Themselves they are usually illiterate, their wealth being their animals only. Therefore we are trying to teach them in areas such as language, reading/writing, life skills, health, and help with business establishment in order to reduce poverty and improve quality of life. Funds are required to employ local staff to assist with teaching and other duties, and if sufficient funds are being raised, even construction of a communal centre for holding workshops, cultural events etc. This will also distract especially warriors from engaging in destructive activities such as cattle raiding etc.
On the side of formal childhood education the primary school we support has 5 classes plus nursary but only 3 classrooms, and only two employed teachers with almost no resources like books available. Some of the smaller children even come almost naked. The complimentary government provided lunch for hardship areas is usually collected by the pupils even in empty oil containers/plastic bags and eaten with bare dirty hands. There is no direct water source at the school and cooking is delayed sometimes as children have to carry water from far from sources like dry rivers by digging holes. Hence we seeking funds also to find better solutions to these issues, as every child should be granted the right to basic eduation, good health, food and clothing.
