Story
I attempted and succeeded in completing a very tough challenge. I built a small raft out of waste plastic bottles and plywood and sailed it on a voyage down river to the open sea. The voyage started inland near the heart of Yorkshire from South of York down the River Ouse to the Humber Bridge. After reaching the bridge I jumped in a small inflatable and then headed around the coast of Yorkshire to Whitby.
I did this challenge not because it was easy but because it would be so difficult. It was a VERY challenging task and I had to go through hundreds of kilometres of river, estuary and sea. Many challenges were overcome on the way. This include negotiating my way through and past strong currents, submerged logs, thick fog, double engine failures, rising and falling tides, swirling eddies, equipment failures, sandbanks, rocks, steep cliffs, leisure craft, bad weather, fishing gear, shipping and of course the famous North Sea.....and I was the only one in the boat. At one point I had to row 3 miles into Scarborough due to a double engine failure.
Most of the money raised will go to Richard Taylor Primary School. Fundraising is essential to so many charities. Without regular donations, they simply wouldn't be able to function as well and carry out the good work that they do. People fund raise for all kinds of reasons - perhaps because they have been personally affected themselves by the good work that a particular institution does or simply because they want to give something back. The money raised by us will be put to good use in helping our school with extra money it needs.
In these busy, and sometimes stressful times, not many families have the time to do charity work. However, on this occasion YOU DON'T HAVE TO !!! All you need to do is donate some money for the school and to support a gritty determination to succeed in reaching the destination against all odds.

8 years agoThis page closes in 3 days. To all those who donated to the cause then a massive thank you from me and the children. The story is in the Harrogate Advertiser in line and in the hard print as we speak. Just search charity voyage on their website. In total I anticipate that we have raised around £2700 £2800.which is great but we won't know how much exactly until the children bring their sponsorship money in. Thanks again guys. I'm sure the kids will love their new outdoor learning equipment.

My name is Mark Ward. I've worked at sea 26 years. I love attempting the impossible. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone but there will be little comfort on this trip going hundreds of kilometres on a home made raft and inflatable boat down river and up the North Sea !
