    Story

On the marathon route in Rome 2014, Nelson first witnessed a group of runners helping a young boy participate in the race in a Joëlette. The look of sheer joy on the face of the youngster as the crowd cheered him on – was the inspiration behind JAPES

The initial goal for JAPES is to raise £4000 to buy a Joëlette Twin two-wheeled chair which will provide access to running events for young people in Scotland who face mobility challenges.

By the end of 2016, JAPES aims to have raised enough funds to buy the Joelette and to begin planning the first inclusion runs next year. On Fathers day 2017, the launch run will see a group of runners give the thrilling opportunity for a youngster to experience the Mens' 10K run in Glasgow. Thereafter more races will give the experience to many young people in Scotland.

In July of this year, Nelson will be running the John Muir Way from Helensburgh to Dunbar. This is a total of 138 miles and he aims to complete this in 5 days. To all intents and purposes, he will be running 5 marathons in 5 days.

To prepare he has already run three marathon distances this year: Edinburgh Meadows Marathon, the Self Transcendence 50K run and the Rome Marathon. He is now in training for the John Muir JAPES sponsored run across Scotland.

You can sponsor Nelson through this JAPES crowdfunding page. Every contribution will help fund this inclusion project.

On my first marathon in April 2014, in Rome, I witnessed a Joëlette being used to allow children with mobility issues to be included in the experience. I was moved by the joy on the faces of the children, runners and spectators. I want to help Scottish children experience this.
