    Story

Baracoa is the hometown of my sister's husband and his family. This week it has been totally decimated by Hurricane Matthew after leaving Haiti and heading for Florida, although it has had nowhere near the coverage in the press. Baracoa was unable to evacuate as other towns further up the coast were able to due to the lack of access and now the internet is down, electricity is sporadic and we just hope that amongst the chaos there is access to fresh and clean water and food. The vast majority of buildings in this beautiful and special place have been destroyed so there is a massive need to get the community back on their feet. In a country where the average salary is around the equivalent of £20 a month whether you are a surgeon or a gardener then there is going to be a long road ahead to put homes and schools and the community back together. My sister is out there right now, and when I can speak to her we can establish the best route of support. We really hope that maybe if we can perhaps do without a coffee for a day or whatever is manageable then we can help to rebuild this brilliant, inspiring and resourceful historic town in a small or meaningful way. So much love and thanks in advance xxxx

Thank you everybody who has supported us in our efforts to rebuild Baracoa. We are beyond grateful and wowed by the response we have had. So much love to each and every one of you. Our next step is to replenish ability to earn a living. Very sadly our Baracoans have lost the majority of their ability to work and create a living as livelihoods were literally blown and swept away by the hurricane so anything that comes in now is about rehabilitating livelihoods. Thank you so, so, so much xxx

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us so far, we are enormously grateful. Harri is back with an update - the bridge in has been washed away and although there is a small boat to carry emergency food and other supplies there is still no electricity and getting the means to rebuild homes in is a challenge. In light of the fact that most people are having to shelter under tarpaulin and have no basics such as bedding we think building supplies and household essentials would be the best place to start. Thank you xxx
