    Story

The Fairfield Halls in Croydon is a unique venue serving many community projects as well as staging live theatre productions, great comedy and contemporary and classical music events.

It is a venue that needs saving and nurturing to fulfil it's potential however, Croydon Council plans to close the venue for at least two years, depriving the town of a significant cultural resource AND running the real and significant risk that the venue may never reopen. All in the absence of any clear strategy on how the venue will operate in the future (if at all) and whilst placing significant financial risk on the council tax and business rate payers in the Borough

Whilst we whole heartedly welcome the major investment of £30m in the venue's refurbishment SAVE OUR FAIRFIELD is campaigning to overturn Croydon Council's decision, to seek a phased redevelopment that will ensure the venue continues to operate and deliver a great music and arts offering to the town during the refurbishment and significantly reduce the financial risk the Council proposal carries.

The Council will spend £12m on the venue but need to raise the further £18m by selling off apartments built around the Fairfield Halls in order to finish the project. This is too risky.

It is critical that we maintain a continuous campaign to guarantee that the Fairfield will reopen to serve the community, and will not be sold off to developers and swallowed up in the College Green development in Croydon. Our biggest fear would be that, since planning permission has yet to be granted, and the plans are flawed, the building could be neglected after closure which often leads to demolition.

Please show your support for the Fairfield Halls and we can raise awareness of the Council's plans through more public meetings, events, protests, paid adverts on Facebook, Twitter, print media and flyers or leaflets.

      Update from the Page owner

After six-months of closure the progress at Fairfield Halls has been agonisingly slow. If it had closed after the Christmas panto, all losses to the local groups and suppliers would have been greatly reduced and the venue would have closed on a record high. We still hear the stories from local schools and organisations whose children are denied the fantastic facilities that Fairfield provided. Why was the venue forced to close at the weakest point of Fairfield's financial year? We continue to hold Croydon Council to account until it re-opens.

We need to keep this venue open - all other entertainment venues in Croydon have either closed or are so run down they aren't viable. Croydon needs Fairfield Halls

I am a filmmaker and casual theatre contractor at the Fairfield Halls. I oppose the closure of Fairfield Halls which will impact on a large number of community projects and cause lost opportunities for school children to engage and perform at the venue.
