The Greenwich Sustainability Hub was developed in 2013 as a collaborative project between the University of Greenwich and the Students’ Union University of Greenwich (SUUG) and has been successfully delivering a range of solutions and activities for students and members of the local community – these include fellowship programmes for student projects, campaigns dealing with current environmental and social issues, and reviews of the university’s sustainability performance.

Unfortunately, it seems that the lifetime of the Hub has come to an end – with the funding bodies at the Union and the University deciding that the Hub needs to be shut down due to a lack of funds. This has come as a shock to all of us working at the Hub, not only because of the impeding end of our projects, but also due to the abrupt cessation of all our activities valued by the students, and all plans that were made for the upcoming year. However, it also filled us with resolve to at least save our projects even if the Hub itself might not be around anymore.

We are calling on everyone interested to support the Hub’s Fellowship programme by donating to a fund! The projects carried out by students have been focused on delivering real results and usable solutions to tackle social and environmental problems in the community. These have included:

- scientific research into the benefits of organic food

- designing "living river walls" which will improve the biodiversity and appearance of urban river landscapes

- a multimedia campaign to provide a much-needed voice to Syrian refugees

We are also calling upon donors to put forward project ideas that they would like to see implemented – with the best chosen as one of our Fellowship projects for the coming year!
