Story
On the 6th April, Nick, Will and Hugo will be making their trip back to Newcastle Uni after Easter, but with a slight difference: they will be cycling the route up North.
We are planning on cycling the 300 miles from Sherborne to Newcastle in support of Action For Diabetics (A4D), a new charity set up by Nick’s father in South East Asia. Asia is currently in the grip of a Diabetes epidemic, with over 200 million sufferers, and A4D provides Type 1 diabetic young people in the region with the opportunity to live a full and active life, by supplying medical and education support. In Western countries, kids born with diabetes will have access to insulin and glucose testing they need to live a full and productive life. However, in less developed countries, lack of education, medicine, and financial support mean that these kids will almost certainly die, a loss of life that is particularly tragic considering that diabetes is fully treatable.
A4D is already providing direct support to a number of young people with Type 1 Diabetes in Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia and are in the process of doing so in Laos. The first and largest current initiative is in Myanmar where they have partnered with Yangon Children's Hospital to support 25 young patients. They aim to double the number of children to 100 in 2016 through expanding the programme to Mandalay, and by increasing the overall levels of diagnosis and follow up across the country. In the last year, A4D have raised over £30,000 and are making sure it is utilised extremely efficiency to provide direct support for these kids.
Please support us by donating to this page and motivate us to bike our way back to uni. We need the help as we have done very little training! Also, please look out for 3 very lost guys when you are driving North.
