Story
Construction work has now started on the new “Windermere Jetty – Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories”, Windermere. The new building will be home to 40 steamboats, motor, sailing and early powerboats. Turner & Townsend are proudly helping client Lakeland Arts to deliver this exciting new project. Lakeland Arts has already raised £16.7m from a number of sources including the Heritage Lottery Fund, but a further £300,000 is still required. The new facility will offer opportunities for children and adults to experience and learn about the collection. Through interactive displays, witnessing and taking part in real life restoration school children will develop a whole range of skills in science, engineering, history of technology and crafts. Kids will get the opportunity to build their own boats, learn how steam engines work and understand fundamental principles of forces, motion and buoyancy. Windermere Jetty will be a unique destination on the lake where you can immerse yourself in the boating heritage of Windermere and see the internationally important collection of boats on land and on water. You will see steam launches, sailing yachts, motor boats and record breaking speed boats. You can find out about the people that built and owned the boats, discover stories of adventure on the lake or learn more about how boats were built to go faster. You will be able to visit the Conservation Workshop to see the conservation team in action. You’ll find out what is happening in the workshop each day, learn about how conservation decisions are made and see how traditional wooden boat building skills will be used to conserve the collection. From here, you'll be able to visit the heart of the museum and see boats on the water in the traditional setting of The Boathouse. See steam launches and motorboats bobbing on the lake and maybe even take a trip out one of the historic boats.
