Story
On 11th September 2016, Glen Williams and Giles Bennett, the Chair and Clerk of West Haddlesey Parish Meeting respectively, will join 60,000 others in the starting lineup of the Great North Run.
We are running to raise money for a defibrillator in the village of West Haddlesey. Having defibrillators available for public access significantly increases the survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest. If there's no intervention, then survival rates are 5%, rising to 9% if CPR only is given. The survival rates jump massively to 74% if an automated external defibrillator is applied within five minutes.
Given the rural location of the village, and its neighbouring villages, first aid response times are naturally greater than they would be in a town or city. In an emergency, therefore, a defibrillator could very well be the difference between life and death. It's one of those devices that we think it would be better to have, and never use, than need and not have.
Please give generously, and thank you in advance for any support that you're able to offer.

8 years agoSo - job done! Glen and I both survived yesterday, Glen finishing in 02:24:36, and me in 2:19:59. The sheer scale of the event is unbelievable - 60000 runners, and hundreds of thousands lining the roads handing out sweets, oranges, vaseline (I partook), ice lollies, and even beer at one stage! Piccie attached from the Tyne Bri, where one of us looks to be a bit more focussed on the task ahead than the other. Not sure who the guy on the right is clapping! Thanks again for your support - will update you when the defib's on its way. G

8 years agoJust over two weeks since fundraising began, and I'm delighted to say that we're just shy of 50% of our target. Thank you so much for your generosity. Training's going well - we both hauled ourselves around a 14.5km route yesterday afternoon, and survived to tell the tale (just about). It did involve knocking on a complete stranger's house and asking for a glass of water out in the wilds south of Hambleton, but once they'd figured we weren't thieves, they hydrated us and sent us on our way. Another update will follow shortly! Giles
